Alcohol and the Brain

Today my team presented our microteaching lesson: Alcohol and its Short Term Effects.  We worked hard preparing the lesson and were pleased that it seemed to go well.  The beer goggles were a hit with the cohort.  Everything we wanted to present worked pretty well.  The critiques were both gentle and valuable.  My first performance as a teacher, with a simulated eight grade class, drained me physically and mentally.  Surely this will change as I progress in the K-8 Certification Program.

The reading selection from Brain Rules, by Medina, was interesting.  It showed me how important exercise, even minimal exercise, is for a healthy brain.  Sleep and stress were also covered in some detail.  We talked about the implications for teachers in the classroom.

The optical illusions (chess board and dragon) were fascinating.  The demonstrations showed in a concrete way how the brain takes what we actually sense and transforms it into what we perceive.

For our last activity we redrew the concept maps for what is involved in health and fitness education.  The elements we included this time were similar to those we included at the beginning of the course.  But now we had a better idea of what the elements actually meant and how they were related.
